Explained: How Tottenham could sign Ryan Sessegnon for a cut-price fee

|

Tottenham and Fulham still can’t come to an agreement over Ryan Sessegnon’s asking price this summer which could result in the 19-year-old staying at Craven Cottage. According to Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard, Fulham want £40m for the midfielder and won’t accept Spurs’ £25m bid.

If the Cottagers won’t budge on their valuation, Sessegnon may have to wait until his contract expires in 2020 to leave. English clubs are required to pay compensation on domestic players under the age of 24, so Tottenham would have to give training fees to Fulham.

The amount they’d have to pay is decided by the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC), based on the player’s appearances, age, potential and reputation. Substantiated interest from other clubs is also factored in the price.

Sessegnon could be available for £500k to overseas clubs, but Tottenham may have to pay considerably more. The Lilywhites could break the PFCC record, which is currently held by Danny Ings (£8m).

Ings joined Liverpool at the age of 22, having made 29 appearances for Bournemouth (eight goals, three assists) and 130 appearances for Burnley (43 goals, 14 assists). He also made 14 appearances for England’s u21s. He contributed 36 goals in 87 Championship games and had 15 in 35 Premier League games.

Sessegnon has racked up 120 appearances for Fulham (25 goals, 18 assists), 71 of which have come in the Championship and 35 of which come in the Premier League. He’s represented England 10 times at u21 level and is three years younger than Ings was at the time of his move.

Burnley were demanding £12m for Ings while Liverpool only wanted to pay £6m. The eventual fee was ironically in between both valuations. Sessegnon could be a lot more money. He’s risen to prominence at a younger age and has been given a much loftier asking price – £40m.

Tottenham are willing to pay up £25m, however, which is still a lot of money for a 19-year-old. Sessegnon’s training fees will be in excess of Ings’ as a result – potentially eight digits. Regardless, Spurs will still be paying a lot less than £25m, so it may pay to wait if they’re confident Sessegnon won’t join an overseas club.
