Explained: How much Tottenham have to pay to sign Benfica forward

|

According to Record (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham may have to pay £27m to sign Jota – his release clause. The 20-year-old rose through the youth ranks to the first-team in February 2019 and has made six appearances in all competitions.

Prior to Jota’s promotion to the senior squad, he impressed for the u19s – 12 goals/assists in 17 games. The Portuguese u20 international also shone for the Benfica B team – 17 goals/assists in 47 games. But now he’s broken into the first-team, Benfica want to tie him down to a long-term deal.

Record say Jota has turned down an extension as he wants more salary than he’s being offered. According to Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old’s deal at the Estadio da Luz has three more years but he may not commit his future past 2022 without Benfica agreeing to pay him more money.

Tottenham have a fervent need to sign a centre-back and centre-midfield, but they have been linked with a winger – Jack Clarke of Leeds United. Jota is another young wide-man with bags of potential, but whether Spurs will pay his release clause remains to be seen.

Benfica are still trying to convince him to stay in Portugal.
