Englishman emerges as centre-back target

|

Yesterday, reports were circulated by several outlets that one cente-back that has emerged as a summer target for Tottenham Hotspur is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Chief among these reports was one from the Evening Standard, who claim that Spurs have been interested in Guehi’s services since he joined the Selhurst Park outfit from Chelsea in the summer of 2021.

Guehi, 22, is blessed with the attribute of being a natural left-footer, and that combined with being an Englishman in his eyes and those of FIFA (having been born in the Ivory Coast but pledged his international allegiance to the English FA), will ensure that he does not come cheap. Furthermore, with his contract not expiring until 2026, Palace are not under any immediate pressure to cash in on Guehi just yet.

Indeed, his reported price tag is approximately £45 million, with any offers slightly above that mark likely to tempt the South London outfit into a sale if those reports from the Express are to be believed.

Interestingly, the Standard notes that Chelsea do not have a buy-back clause for Guehi (not that that would dissuade them from trying to sign him), meaning that there are no concrete obstacles to Spurs’ potential pursuit of Guehi beyond Palace’s resolve to keep him at Selhurst Park.

However, the report does state that Chelsea have a hefty sell-on clause and an option to match potential bidders should they want to re-sign Guehi.

Whether this speculative interest from Spurs amounts into something more substantial come the summer remains to be seen, but it does seem to be one to keep an eye on given how long Spurs have reportedly been eyeing up the young centre-back.
