Ending the Top 4 Elitism

Hi all, I actually already mentioned this on a previous thread but felt like it deserved its own discussion, so here is my view on how I feel we could regenerate English football and maybe eradicate the top 4 dominance to a certain degree.

Firstly, ignoring the big money backers of certain clubs, the league itself is set up in a way that promotes elitism. The top four qualify for the Champions League, receive the massive financial windfall that comes with it and are therefore in a much better financial state to go out and do it again the following season. Repeat to infinite?.

Because of this, CL qualification then becomes the be all and end all of the season which means that (to these “top 4 teams” teams at least) the domestic cups hold very little prestige with the League cup being nothing short of Mickey Mouse and even the FA cup not really being of much interest until the very last stage when the big boys actual start to treat it with the respect it deserves.

Now my suggestion would be this. Give “CHAMPIONS” League Qualification to the Premiership CHAMPIONS, the FA Cup CHAMPIONS and the League Cup CHAMPIONS?..the clues in the title!!…..2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the League would then qualify for the Europa league of which the CHAMPIONS should qualify for the CL.

To my mind this would rejuvenate the status of our domestic cups allowing any team the opportunity to genuinely compete for a Champions League place and at least one seasons worth of the money that comes with it. It would also make the Europa League (currently the League Cup of the European
stage) worth competing in and prevent teams like Villa last season disregarding it cause they thought they could maintain 4th in the prem.

Now obviously even with this set up the “top 4” already have a head start because of the domination they have been able to impose but at least through the cups the second and even third tier of teams would have a realistic chance of a one off cup day victory and far fairer crack at CL qualification.

Anyway, in reality, this is probably never likely to happen but unless some serious changes are made to the way our football is structured I see little chance – other than bringing in more sugar daddy investors – of the gap between the top 4 and the rest ever being eradicated on a long term basis.

So in closing I ask do you think this would be a welcome change and if not what other ways do you think we could remove the “Top 4 Elitism” from our beloved game?
