Dutchman could leave Tottenham, manager treatment to blame – opinion

|

Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Paulo Gazzaniga will start for Tottenham against Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, with Hugo Lloris to be given a rest. It’s bad news for Michel Vorm as the Dutchman looks set to remain third-choice between the sticks and is likely to be an unused substitute against the Gunners on Wednesday night.

Vorm was once regarded as one of the best No.2s in Europe, but now he finds himself behind both Lloris and Gazzaniga in the pecking order. The 35-year-old may have to leave Tottenham in pursuit of first-team football, meaning a January departure could be on the cards. Vorm has made 47 appearances in all competitions for Spurs since joining in 2014 from Swansea City.

The shot-stopper has made four appearances this season, the last of which came against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on October 24. He’s been left out of the matchday squad in the Premier League and Champions League by Pochettino and should weigh up his offers next month. Vorm’s contract expires next summer, so Tottenham have a choice to make whether they should cash in early or let him leave for free at the end of the season.
