Jermain Defoe had one eye on Europe, while scoring the goal that condemned his former club to Championship football next season.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win was enough to relegate Charlton, who will join Watford in the second tier next season.

Defoe who came through the youth ranks at Charlton before moving onto West Ham told Sky Sports after the game: ‘At the end of the day you’ve got to be professional and win the game for your team, It’s a shame they are down, I’ve got a lot of friends here.’

On Spurs bid to qualify for Europe he added: ‘We should be in Europe, we had a good run in Europe this season and we want to be there again.’

Nice one Defoe, another goal and this time you weren’t even on the pitch long enough to break into a sweat!
