With Tuesday evening’s disappointing performance and result in the first leg of our Champions League clash with Ajax, the White Hart Lane leg of the Semi-Final didn’t go how anyone had hoped.
The Dutch side take a 1-0 advantage through to the second tie at their ground following a 15th minute goal from Donny van de Beek, and it’s fair to say that despite the disappointment in the Spurs fanbase, plenty were impressed with the efforts of the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.
I’m sure somewhere down the line this will turn into a van de Beek is the ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen/Dele Alli debate (might use that for the headline actually), but after the midweek action the Dutchman has 15 goals and 11 assists in 45 games for his club in the 2018/19 campaign – and whilst some will point to the Eredivisie not being a great barometer of Premier League success (Vincent Janssen), others will say football is about luck of the draw (Robin van Persie).
The kid seems to have the basics manager Mauricio Pochettino could work with and develop further, so I’m certainly not surprised to see plenty of fans wanting to see him arrive over the summer.
I'd genuinely take 4-5 players from this Ajax team.
Onana, de Ligt, Donny van de Beek, Neres and de Jong (If Barcelona hadn't already snapped him up).
