Could An Unfancied Club Influence The Title Race?

|

Okay, so we’ve just lost a game and we’re all suitably disappointed. Despite the expectations of some supporters we were always going to drop points at some stage …. just like we will drop some more. A realistic challenge for this season’s title depended on the two teams above us also dropping points; more points than us. It remains to be seen if that, unlikely as it seems, will happen.

The ‘usual’ clubs fill the top six positions on the table. Then come all the ‘W’ clubs, with Watford at the head. The interesting thing is that every top six club, except Tottenham, still have to play Watford before the season ends.

Many things will happen in the course of the next few weeks to determine which club will be crowned PL champions. Watford is certainly one of them. Currently in seventh position, Watford has the following record: P27, W11, D7, L9, F39, A35, GD4, PTS40. They are one of the few teams with a positive GD.

Watford have already avoided the fear of relegation. They are safe for another season. This means they can play without fear or pressure …. they can enjoy the rest of the season and play with complete freedom. They can even afford to experiment! Watford’s last game, a 5-1 away win at Cardiff, will certainly do wonders for the team’s confidence.

If City and Pool go on to win all of their remaining games then we were never in the race. We were just there to keep them honest. But any club can drop points when least expected, and with dire consequences. The beauty of football?

Watford is just one of many factors that could affect the outcome of the current season and do us a favour. But it’s an interesting factor and one that has not been considered, as far as I know. It’s just another PL twist that the football gods like to dish up to keep us supporters on the edge of our seats. If this ‘factor’ fails to work in our favour there are many others that might! The season ends in May …. never in February.

And then, of course, there is always the CL.

Win or lose …. Gotta love football!
