“Competition…There Isn’t Any” – Spurs Defender Has An Interesting Take On Poch’s Pecking Order

|

Tottenham Hotspur right back Serge Aurier has recently claimed that he has no ‘competition’ for his place in the first team under manager Mauricio Pochettino, despite not actually making an appearance for the club so far this year.

Following the departure of Kieran Trippier over the summer, Poch has so far favoured Kyle Walker-Peters on the right side of defence, and with him unavailable following injury, he pivoted to Davison Sanchez to varying success and although some in the fanbase thought that the 26-year-old Ivory Coast international would get a proper run in the side, it simply hasn’t happened.

Having found himself on the substitutes bench for three of our four Premier League clashes so far in 2019/20, during the September international break, Aurier gave a short interview to outlet Bal des Productions.

For those of us who live on Google Translate, Football London provided a translation.

“What competition? There isn’t any. I’d simply decided to leave, which was normal for me. Many things were taken into consideration. In the end, I wasn’t able to leave. It proves the club trust me on a lot of points, and we’ll see. We’ll see how the season pans out, but for now, I’m here, the transfer window is shut and we need to concentrate on the campaign ahead.”

I’m not sure whether something has been lost in translation here, as despite not being able to leave, I’m not sure that you can pivot to ‘the club trust me’ given his game time so far. With that said, at least it seems his focus is right and he’s not moping about not getting a move.
