Chief flies to London for talks with Tottenham, transfer decision could lead to bloated squad

|

According to reports in Italy, Sampdoria’s Director of Football has flown to London for talks with Tottenham and Arsenal over Joachim Andersen. The centre-back is on the radar for a number of clubs, particular the North London duo, but it’s hard to see Daniel Levy making a concerted attempt to procure his signature.

Spurs have an abundance of centre-backs currently, with Mauricio Pochettino being able to choose from Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth. Even Eric Dier can operate as a makeshift central defender when needs be. So, if Tottenham brought in Andersen in January or at the end of the season, they risk having a very bloated squad.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld may well be leaving the club at the end of their contracts next summer, but Daniel Levy surely isn’t putting his eggs into one basket before he’s completely certain that the pair will not renew contracts. While they remain at Tottenham and have not agreed any pre-contract deals with suitors, there’s always a chance they could extend their stay.

That’s not to say Andersen wouldn’t improve the Spurs side. The 22-year-old has already made more than 20 appearances in all competitions for Sampdoria since his 2017-move from FC Twente so he’s clearly developing well. It would be a surprise to see Tottenham signing him, however.
