Can Spurs Tuchel Chelsea & Continue In The Cup – Match Thread

|

Here’s wishing all Tottenham Hotspur fans a Very Happy New Year and a fortune filled 2022 – especially VS’ers (as you are the ones reading this!)

Having taken a late three points from Watford on New Year’s Day as Davinson Sanchez hit in injury time, Antonio Conte has a change of pace this midweek as our attention again diverts to our EFL Cup run.

Wednesday evening’s fixture sees us travel up to Stamford Bridge to take on Thomas Tuchel’s high flying Chelsea side and although we are nine points behind them in the table (we have two games in hand) there seems to be trouble brewing if £95million Romelu Lukaku’s recent barbs are anything to go off.

But we don’t need to concern ourselves with that, of more importance is our own performance on the day and as things stand we will again be without Steven Bergwijn, Cristian Romero and Ryan Sessegnon but whether or not that list grows over the next few days remains to be seen.

Whilst we’re still in touch with the upper end of the table, I can’t be alone in hoping for a proper Cup run this year and if we can boot Chelsea out odds move in our favour.

    0-3!

  • TK says:

Maybe we can get Lukaku on the cheap.

Geoff, it’s been too lonely to see your comment without company.

I’m sure we will give it our best shot, but we all know we won’t go through.

I think conte will be having a few tactical ploys to deal with chelsea, and various combinations… 343..4321…433 351 shape or similar (sonny hk10 lucas fwd players). Mf selection of hoj, skippy, ndombele, lo celso, dele winks. We (VS) remember that Dele has over the years, scored consistently against chelsea and if he is a starter / sub he has to get his ghosting runs going and score again, and some good passing with not losing possession too much. Spurs win 2-1 COYS

I welcome the optimism shown by you guys but seen how they played vs Liverpool a little concerned .
When we last played them in the semi final didn’t we win at the Bridge but lost the 2nd leg at home ?

  • wentworth says:

If we offload the six plus I have previously mentioned we could then buy Lukaku and Adama Traore.
Move Harry Kane into attacking midfielder. ( He has always been our best midfielder since Eriksen left—good passer, good tackler, good long range shooter, good in the air, good dribbler, strong personality.
Lukaku then becomes No. 9 (Striker)
Adama Traore can add the excitement that we lack and hopefully get some decent crosses into the box.
    Team:-
Lloris, Sanchez Dier Davies, Emerson Reguilon, Kane (Captain) Skipp, Son Lukaku Traore.

Subs:– Lucas, Romero, Hojberjg, Dele, Rodon, Tanganga, Nile John, White or Sessegnon.
    Top 4 here we come.

This game could be right up our street!

They will certainly be in our faces, we stick together, defend well, frustrate em and hit them on the break, their defence is poor and can be got at, simple!

As the Pool game line up 3.5.2. COYS

  • Niall D says:

Hi folks, Dan thanks for the thread, but terrible puns m8 (Touch el Chelsea) 🙄😉.
I feel that just now we are a different animal, than when we last faced Chelsea.
There are a few positives to think of before this game.
As both HT and I think, we are performing better as a unit /team or what ever you want to call it, many of our “weaker” players are now stepping up to the mark.
We are stronger, fitter, more confident, better drilled, we have stronger tactics and a team which at least on the surface seems to want to do their best for the manager.
With that said, Chelsea are a strong team and as was shown at Liverpool even going down can comeback strong against Pool who are top 3 side, they do have a very good squad, but all isn’t as rosy there as it could be, they are open to goal threats.
Conte will have us well drilled, unlike Mourinho’s tenure we will not fear Chelsea and play just to draw, Chelsea may win it, but we won’t sit back and be a punch bag.
I think we could get a difficult win.

In some respects Chelsea are under more pressure than we are. Earlier in the season it looked like a three way battle for the title. Now Chelsea and Liverpool are watching City disappear into the distance as they fall further and further behind. Lukaku obviously hasn’t helped. There’s no way to know how much the Chelsea manager and players will feel that pressure. One thing Tuchel has shown is he’s very good tactically so it will be a test for Conte as to whether he can match him. When you are this close to a trophy you obviously play a full strength team, whether that will be good enough remains to be seen.

  • PompeyYid says:

Mix it with em in midfield in their faces, defend well, keep the game wide, hit em on the break, their defence is iffy to say the least, simples lol! COYS

  • block 108 spurs says:

Interesting suggestion WW… HK10 as amf, and a experienced cf leading the attack… this could work… But will conte / levy etc go with this? As a 4321 shape allows for a no.10 role for HK10 to adapt to.(at least harry has the right shirt no. 🙂

Depends on who we can sign and who is sold..

  • TK says:

Four days into January and no signings. Levy Out!

He’ll wait until the last 15 minutes of the window to save a few bob. And we’ll end up with someone dredged up from the left overs.

Conte will start thinking about which team in Italy he will manage next season. Levy will suspect this and fire him in early May just so that we have to pay out the extra money for firing him.

Sherwood will manage for the last three matches.

Please convince me that this scenario is unduly negative.

Alternative: Poch arrives in May bringing Messi with him on a free transfer. But this will upset Kane who wants the biggest pay on the club.

Tomorrow vs Scum: 2 x 2. we let them score in extra time to take the win from us.

Tomorrow vs Scum: 2 x 2 we score in extra time to take the win from them.

  • wentworth says:

Strong reports that Wolves want Doherty back and Ajax want Bergweijn.
Hopefully this will free up some cash to wake Levy from his slumbers.
There are others that need to go.
    Time to aim high.

  • TK says:

    WW,

Aiming high includes selling Doherty back? Must be a low ceiling. although the lad deserves to play for a club where he would play.

Aiming high would be bringing in the next mousa dembélé. or the next little Modder Focker. Even the next Van der Vaart, so long as he doesn’t insist on taking corner kicks.

Think that Kane would be happy to be the creative attacking midfielder instead of striker if it leads to some silverware? I suspect he’d be unhappy winning silverware if it meant he isn’t the principal goal scorer.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I feel that we can at least draw this match tonight. Then a win at home sees us in the final again.

    Here’s to hoping!

    Chelsea 3-3 Spurs!

Then again, we might just beat them in both legs.

    You never know!

  • 123spurs says:

    Doh
    Ndombele
    Winks
    Stevie B
    Dele

Need to be moved on, even themselves knowing they are not and not good enough to be a starting for a regular place,

  • 123spurs says:

I’d take adama right now, his pace is frightening up top with kane and son.
