I have to confess to finding much of our play under AVB as being a little dull. Lacking both pace and imagination at times. Perhaps it is me that is at fault, as I am now too settled in the high tempo 100 mile an hour stuff of the English game and anything else is boring and slow. In truth, I’m not sure this is the case, as I love nothing better than to see vision and creativity, but that is perhaps the problem in that we are still lacking those qualities and all too often are still too predictable in our play, which makes it all the worse, when it is slow and ponderous, as we saw for much of yesterday.

When the football world drools at the beauty of Arsenal’s play and goals, whilst we are praised for a usually solid defence, but have only scored at an average of a Premiership goal a game in our eight games, it may be our joint most productive Prem start in terms of points, but for me and I’m sure many others, it isn’t pretty too watch and if I’m honest, I can’t claim to be enjoying our early season ‘success’ as much as I would like.

I might be expecting too much too soon, as our new boys have only just arrived and developing a team to play fluent football, whilst retaining a top four challenge is very very difficult, and I assume it will get better given time, but so far, I am mildly impressed. but barely entertained, aside from the odd moment or period of magic. What frustrates me more is that I believe we have the quality of player, so is it the tactical restraints and disciplines that are the problem? Again it may well be a situation where the manager has to instil the structure, before the players can begin to show their creative side, but so far, I see the same problems with out lone striker as we had last season, even with different players. Is this their lack of quality, a poor balance or the coaching demands that is blunting our attacking edge.

It might be that I am missing the point and we are infact playing superbly and the intricacies of our play are lost on my uneducated mind. Perhaps those like a more methodical build up and possessional play, think we are great to watch, but does 70% of possession really mean anything, if most of it is in areas that the opposition are happy to let you have the ball? do teams already know that games will be tight and that we struggle to break an opposition down, therefore catching us on the break, as West Ham did the other week is the way forward. but all that we will ultimately see is another season of nearly but not quite and it also not being that pretty to watch.

Perhaps it is all very well me complaining, but what would I or anyone else do to make things different? It is easy to suggest that we only play one ‘defensive’ CM and perhaps we should try someone like Holtby there or perhaps bring back Tom Carroll in January, whilst would loading the box quicker, by adding pace, playing two strikers or just instructing them to concentrate more of offence, as opposed to defensive thinking. Maybe, look at Lamela or Lennon to pair up with Townsend, as a more pacy and penetrative two to work around Soldado. surely Cristian Eriksen is the right man to pull the creative strings, based on what we have seen. I also believe the return of Danny Rose, will add something extra, and he has been badly missed.

This isn’t meant to be a moan or a miserable fan wanting my cake and eating it all in one sitting, but I am just asking a question as to if and when we will get the balance between winning and winning with some style and also how best we might achieve that feat. i leave it in your very capable hands…
