The following claims were made in today’s Independent:

They say that it was the ‘club’s hierarchy’ who told Martin Jol to play Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov after the Spurs boss had decided to rest him for the Stamford Bridge clash.

They claim ‘The discussion took place over Saturday and Sunday morning and is understood to have gone all the way up to boardroom level after Jol originally decided that Berbatov should be rested with tomorrow’s second leg Uefa Cup game against Braga in mind. The response from senior figures at Tottenham was that there was no way the club’s best striker should be left out of such an important, high-profile tie.’

They say following talks Jol switched from his original plan to play Mido which again, according to the Independent, didn’t please the Egyptian striker.

They went on to say this could ‘say something’ about Jols future after being overruled by the clubs hierarchy, something the paper says ‘is an occupational hazard for Jol at a club where he does not have full control over signings.’

It is a concern we have a manager who is over ruled by a board, potentially exacerbating an existing injury with one of our best players, as I cannot believe MJ would not have wanted to have field his top side. It might have explained Mido’s lethargic performance -on an up, then a down, then having to get back up for the game. Playing decisions must be left exclusively to the Manager
