Tottenham Hotspur fans aren’t alone in having to find something to do at the moment following the suspension of the 2019/20 fixture calendar, but there has been a strange reaction to a recent interview former manager Mauricio Pochettino held – where he discussed Son Heung-Min’s international involvement last season.
Maybe frustrations are rife for people given the current uncertainty with life, not least football, but I can’t help but think the reaction here is over the top to what are perfectly understandable comments – understandable not least because every fan was aware of it as well.
Speaking on Jake Humphrey’s recent podcast, the former Argentine international explained on the subject of the 27-year-old’s Asian Games adventures.
“No one talks about this. Today, Sonny is at Tottenham because we allowed him to go and play two competitions that weren’t compulsory. By not being selfish and saying, ‘No, Sonny needs to stay here because of the club.’ If not, two years and you would need to stop the contract with Son. No one says anything about that. It was our decision to provide him the time to go.”
As fans will remember, as a consequence of their success in the competition, Sonny was exempted his required military service owing to the laws in South Korea – so there really wasn’t a choice for either party here.
The reactions on social media target Poch for simply speaking about it, whereas on my reading, he seems to simply be suggesting that Sonny was content for the club to make the decision, and wasn’t bending any ears – which you’d expect from Sonny given his approach to life.
I just don’t get the criticism?
Can he just get a job now and stop selling stories about spurs😐

Some people’s “best ever manager” selling stories about the club 🥴

Why would he feel the need to even say this? Who does it help?? Some things are best unsaid in public. Unless there is an ulterior motive?

He's getting more and more like the ex who can't accept it's over….

Why would people talk about it, everyone knows we had to let him go or he would have had to do military service. Not like we did it to do him a favour, we did it for our own interests.

Some things are better left unsaid

Could Poch not just go and self isolate somewhere
