Toby Alderweireld’s future has been a hot talking point at Tottenham Hotspur for a while now.

Will he leave the club this summer with the £25million release clause in his contract surely a carrot for rival sides? Or will he commit his future to us and decide that remaining in north London is what is best for him?

Manchester United and even arch-rivals Arsenal have been linked with a move for the enforcer this summer because of his current contract situation.

Well, it would seem the latter of the two questions would be the answer where Alderweireld is concerned.

Twitter user Ricky Sacks has revealed that the Belgian has confirmed his desire to remain at Tottenham beyond the summer.

“I still have a contract – so I’ll be there. After a few weeks of vacation, I’ll have the freshness and the desire to start the season again at Tottenham,” he has been quoted as saying, although where he has said it is questionable.

It seems that is a consensus amongst a number of supporters as well, with many doubtful that Alderweireld has actually committed himself to the club and is instead just saying the things we all want to hear.

Even Sacks replied to a comment made by one fan suggesting that he was not entirely convinced and stressed it should not be taken as ‘gospel’.

The majority of supporters had felt his comments were just part of a PR stunt, with one suggesting he was doing a better job than Christian Eriksen in that department following his latest comments about his own future (Ekstra Bladet). Here are some of their reactions…

  • I am amazed at all the armchair pundits who think that football clubs will just “buy” a 30 year old’s contract for 25 million pounds. Tottenham have too many “fans” whose pleasure in football comes from attacking their own team and its management. Time to move. things have changed.

    • Toby is worth twice his release fee, of course its a given that multiple teams will meet it and then likely the player will decide where to go. Your complaint is that fans have become educated, interested, and opinionated? What the heck else is a fan supposed to do – blind, unquestioning, idiotic faith?

  • There is no reason at all why Toby is not being genuine here and intending to see out his contract. It is immaterial whether anyone meets his 25 million pound buy out clause, if he has no intention of leaving. He may prefer to fulfill the final year of his contract and then leave on a free transfer, but hopefully during that time period a deal can be agreed on a new contract.

    • He could be genuine as maybe his family want to stay in London as long as possible, children at school for example. Don’t know how old his children are but they may be at a crucial age in terns of their schooling. Sometimes family comes first for footballers. May be staying another year makes a difference to his family situation. Or may be he feels if he has another good season spurs might give him the contract he wants and he doesn’t have to uproot his family. On the other hand he isnt likely to say I’m going, he has been professional in his PR for the last couple of season tbh. Just wait and see but no reason to disbelieve him.
