Alasdair Gold provides key update on Japhet Tanganga’s contract situation at Spurs

|

Tottenham may have endured a week of turmoil after the announcement that non-playing staff would be furloughed but there could finally be some good news for supporters, according to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold.

It relates to youngster Japhet Tanganga, who has emerged as a bright talent this season, particularly under Jose Mourinho having made 10 appearances under the Portuguese boss.

Fans have certainly taken to him after impressive displays against Liverpool and Manchester City, where he earned respective WhoScored ratings of 7.3 and 7.8.

Many should be thrilled, therefore, to hear that the club has activated a clause in his contract to extend his stay beyond the summer – having only agreed a one-year contract at the beginning of the season.

Could Tanganga go on to be a Tottenham great?

Yes

No

There was some doubt about his future due to no long-term contract being agreed. That is something which is still up in the air currently and should be addressed by the club, particularly now there is no football being played to distract anyone.

Football.London report that a new contract is in the works for the defender, with Mourinho rating both him and Oliver Skipp very highly – having previously stated that both are already in the dressing room.

That is very encouraging news, as it shows our manager is preparing for the future and willing to offer chances to young players, which was a key feature of Mauricio Pochettino’s success.

The breakthrough of players like Harry Kane and Harry Winks has undoubtedly helped in the strides we’ve made in recent years, and although this season has seen a halt to that it is possible good times will return with the likes of Tanganga and Skipp in the side.
