The agent of Napoli midfielder Amadou Diawara has denied reports that the 20 year old could be joining our club in the summer.

Rumour mongers reported yesterday that the Guinean was being lined up as a long term replacement for Mousa Dembele.

However, speaking to Rai Sport in Italy (quotes via, Daniele Piraino refuted the claims, and also dismissed reports that the player has a release clause in his contract:

‘I don`t know who`s putting out such destabilising rumours at such a delicate moment in Napoli`s season. I don`t know who`d be interested in doing that. The release clause? It doesn`t exist, not for Italy nor for foreign countries. It hasn`t been looked at and there`s no negotiation with Tottenham, with English teams or any team in Europe. Diawara is very happy at Napoli, he has three years on his contract and he`s focused.’

The holding midfield player signed for the Partenopei from Bologna in 2016 for ?14.5million. It was sizeable fee for a teenager, but he had a good first season at the San Paolo. His second campaign has seen him make fewer starts so far, but he is still highly regarded in Italy.

Dembele is now 30, and has a contract that expires in 2019, but talks over a new deal have reportedly started. I have no doubt the club`s scouting department will have looked at long term replacements, but the Belgian`s form suggests he still has a fair few years yet to go at the top of his game.

  • Sounds like a good prospect but Dembele is good to go for atleast another 3-4 years taking him to his 34-35th birthday. Would be good to see him get his testimonial with us eventually a la Carrick with Utd. Still needs another 4 season’s for that though but no reason why should not happen. Then there’s Sissoko as his cover so unless something happens here, would be a big surprise to see a big sum let go of for the kid to sit on the bench primarily. It’s Sessegnon and Malcom I’d love to see playing for us next season – 2 of the brightest young talents around by all accounts and the kind of players we should continue to aspire to. I guess the same could be said of Diawara but money and foreign player rules means there has to be a limit to what we can do. If he’s really that good buy him and then ease him into the squad nice and slowly, same with Sessegnon and Malcom – similar to what we’re doing with Moura.

  • I looked at him a lot before he went to Napoli as I thought he was a true world class kid and yes he is and if we can get him in do it as he will definitely help bring tittles to the new lane. Super player away before his years . ( Harry Kane one team coys )
