Centre-half Juan Foyth’s commanding performance against West Ham United in the EFL Cup saw manager Mauricio Pochettino reward him with a start against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday evening.
It was a mixed performance from the young lad and the headlines from the game will note his involvement in both penalties being conceded that made far more of a game of it than it probably should’ve been given our early goal advantage.
Quite pleasingly I think, the reactions on social media were positive and acknowledged that the 20-year-old is continuing to learn his trade and ultimately mistakes happen in the game. Plenty also thought he could’ve been given greater protection at points from more senior members of the side.
Juan Foyth’s recent emergence is a very good sign for Spurs as it gives Poch more options in the central defensive area, especially with Jan Vertonghen still a few weeks away from fitness. #COYS

Foyth was good and don’t care what anyone says. #thfc

Mauricio Pochettino’s management of Juan Foyth deserves to be highlighted.
The young central defender again proved last night what a star he is going to eventually become for Spurs.

He was put in two awkward situations by teammates. Could easily have happened to Toby. I thought Foyth had a good game.

Feel a bit for Juan Foyth. That first penalty only comes about due to Tripper’s error seconds beforehand, and for me, the second is just a shoulder to shoulder with no foul.

can't blame Foyth, he still did well for the match and made a few good tackles; he had to make a decision and it was risk he had to take #coys

Hope he really means this. Foyth has a lot to offer https://t.co/z3BM48cadP

In any event though, it was only the second appearance of the season for the Argentine and he’ll learn far more from a game like that than he would an easy ride in defence. With his Premier League debut out of the way if there were slight nerves underlying his errors, that shouldn’t be a problem next time either.
Good post game praise from Poch as well.
