A Convincing Spurs Win, But Not Necessarily A Convincing Performance – Match Stats

|

Earlier this evening Tottenham Hotspur turned their attentions away from Premier League action having ended our mini losing streak with the draw against Arsenal, and placed them firmly on the Champions League Round of 16 second leg clash against Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs went into the tie with the clear advantage, holding a 3-0 aggregate lead from the Wembley leg following goals from Son Heung-Min, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente, so many expected that Dortmund would come out of the blocks in the hopes of getting a quick goal to boost their confidence of an extraordinary fight back.

They certainly came out of the blocks, dominating 70% of possession in the opening 45 minutes and created ten chances, with five on target. Spurs, by comparison, mustered one effort and that was wide.

The game remained deadlocked at the break though and that was the only stat that mattered.

Having weathered the storm Spurs came out fighting in the second half and Harry Kane made it 1-0 on the night three minutes after the restart.

Dortmund still dominated, but we soaked the pressure and the goal made it game over.

4-0 and Spurs march on – goes under the tag of ‘just enough’ once again in 2018/19 which is no bad trick to have and a solid rearguard action to boot.
