Probably the worst Spurs performance I’ve seen, and there have been some bad ones.
We didn’t threaten their goal at all in reality.
We played some kind of kick it in the air game, give it to the forwards, at chest height and hope they’ll do something with the ball.
Poor passing, movement, invention, just poor.
Best player on the pitch a 33 year old ex Norwich player (midfield General) for M’boro ‘ what did we all want during the TW yep a Midfield General, Playmaker what ever you call it.
What do we have Winks and Hoj, is it Hinkz and Woj, they play so similar and boring, it’s hard to tell the difference, both so negative and boring.
Absolutely terrible, I don’t even have an answer, it’s not as if Boro’ were great either. Just lost for words…

  • BelgianSpur says:

    Shocking performance. Complacent.

Top 4 is a distant memory now.

At this stage, I just hope Conte plays the kids the rest of the way. No good persevering with players who aren’t good enough or dedicated enough. Top 4 is a dream and even top 6 is an uphill battle.

I’d rather finish 10th than finish in the ECL again, and I’d rather see kids with desire than passengers who are mentally weak.

  • Danny Winter says:

In fairness, I’d have found that a fantastic game had I supported Middlesbrough or any of the 90 other professional clubs in the country. Night all.

  • wentworth says:

What is the point in playing Winks. He hovers around the half way line passing the ball back further into our half. Surely White or Devine have more about them.
Doherty always looks totally puzzled when he receives the ball. Then he does nothing with it.
Bergweijn is totally overrated after his opening goal for Spurs. Has done nothing to shout about since.
Emerson is worse than poor old Aurier.
I was waiting for substitutions but my heart sank when I saw what was coming on. It was a chance for either Devine or White but no we had to have the usual hopeless subs. Then Scarlett gets his usual 90 seconds. Conte looked utterly deflated tonight. Poor guy he has no decent players to support him.

  • Love totty says:

Why so negative? We clearly decided to get out of the cup so as to concentrate on getting top 4. We cleverly took it to extra time just to be credible. Well done lads!

  • jod says:

We are essentially a one trick pony. If a team comes out all guns blazing, tries to play the kind of football Love totty so loves, we can kill them on the counter attack. But most teams are a lot more street wise than that, they come to win and set up accordingly. Then we have no idea how to break them down, pace doesn’t work if the opposition don’t give you any space to run into. What is most worrying is that one manager after another has run into the same problem. For all Conte’s reputation he seems to be hitting the same brick wall Mourinho did.

  • wentworth says:

We are not going to win anything this season. So now is the time to give a chance to some of the academy lads. Paskotsi, White and Devine must be given a go and Scarlett to get more than 90 seconds on the pitch.
Time for Winks, Doherty, Emerson, Bergweijn to be rested and sold. There is no point in persevering with this crew.

  • Niall D says:

    Disagree to a degree WW.
You’ve got to get those guys in the shop window.
Some are improving, for example Sess and Doh are getting better, are they good enough???
But having them on the bench only leads us to the ‘Aurier “conclusion, where we get nowt for them.
Our current issue is trying to get a system and indeed a group of players who can get us a consistent number of wins together.
We are constantly over run in midfield and we defend much too deep.
Our build up is way too, slow and often yet again we were going sideways and backwards when a forward pass was on.
No one is brave enough to take on the Risky ball, no one in our team last night seemed to have the time Howson had on the ball, or Ward Prowse had in the S’oton game.
No one to take decent free kicks, or shots from outside the box, wasn’t Coutino available on loan in January????
As I said in another post it’s two steps forward and one step back.
We don’t have the squad or players to change up games
We could argue that our best midfield has to take to the pitch in Bente and Skippy.
It shows we all have our complaints, I heard some comments re Sonny (lately) that he never scores the “important” goal nor does he now score against bigger teams.
I haven’t noticed this personally, but I do know he was bad last nite.
Do we give academy players a run out, not sure, it was only around a month ago that many on here and on other sites were gutting Tananga, Scarlett proved a bit toothless in our Euro games, it is a fine balance, getting it right, I’m not against, White or Devine getting a run, but for me, not whole sale.
Agreed looking at last night, would they be any worse.
But on our day we can take teams to church, but it’s getting that consistency.
That was a hard watch last nite, I honestly thought we had about 3-0 nailed on, wasn’t to be.
We just don’t seem to dominate the way we used to.
I always used to think, win, lose, or draw that at least we were as good as if not better than the opposition, with better possession, skill, chances, I know we’re getting wins, but it’s not the same way.
It hasn’t been that way for about 3 seasons now.
Suppose we’ll just have to accept a different way of playing now.
But I’m starting to lose the “joy” of being a, Spurs supporter. 😢

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Two steps forward and one step back can be seen as progress. We are not progressing at all.

  • BelgianSpur says:

jod – maybe the reason coaches like Conte and Mourinho aren’t getting anything out of the players is simply because those players aren’t good enough, a few exceptions aside.

    Conte’s a coach, not a magician.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Niall – fair point about putting players in the shop window. Having said that, if we are going to play said players, and they are going to put in shocking performances, it’s only going to hurt their value. It’s a double edged sword.

The big issue with Aurier was a combination of high wages, an expiring contract and a desire to get lots of money back. it was never going to work.

The other factor to consider is that for players who are still under consideration for selection in the upcoming world cup, they’ll want to be playing week in, week out to be on the plane. This summer will be an important time for those players – the likes of Sanchez, Davies, Royal etc. They’ll be more inclined to accpet less favourable terms in order to improve their prospects than they other might have been (such as Aurier who had no good reason to lower his demands in any move).

  • Niall D says:

    I disagree slightly Geoff.
There is measurable improvement in some ways, area covered, sprints to mention but a few.
The biggest stat being that we are around 3/4 points better off than this time in the previous two seasons.
In my opinion we are much too inconsistent and lack players to change up the game.
We can on our day beat any one, but on the other side as shown last nite can be beaten by anyone.
I would still like to see how we perform with Skippy and Bentacur on the pitch.
For me it’s a cling on by our fingertips till summer.
Then as WW says, we need to get a wholesale clearout.

    • Geofspurs says:

ND …. I understand what you are saying but the last two seasons were also very poor so there is little to be gained by comparing them to this season.

We have a long way to go before a conversation with the word ‘progress’ in it is meaningful. Sad, but true, I feel.

  • Niall D says:

    Agree BS,
Some good points, re players wanting away, hopefully, looking at January TW, Levey has loosened his grip on transfers, and may let players go, who don’t fit the mould.
And an agreeable move for all sides could be the best option.
Re transfers I note, with interest that CCV is causing a stir at Celtic, raising awareness from some Premiership clubs.
Hopefully our other “loanees” will cause as much interest.

  • Love totty says:

Everyone is just talking round in circles. The plain fact after 3 rubbish seasons by past standards, is that that the players are not good enough technically nor switched on psychologically. There is no point wishing it weren’t so or expecting results to get better this season. I would happily settle for some pragmatic performances in the short term but I fear even that is beyond this squad.

    • BelgianSpur says:

Which standards are you comparing to?

We are constantly benchmarking against Spurs 2015-2019, but is tthis the benchmark or the outlier? A wider look across a larger timeframe (10 years, 20 years) will merely show we are pretty much where we should be.

  • Geofspurs says:

LT …. You just about nailed it.

  • Niall D says:

    Must agree LT.
It now is about pragmatism, for this, season anyway, gone are the days, where we gave a good account of ourselves.
With that said we aren’t alone, there are a few in and around us with the same issues.
Just some consistency in our play and results would do for now.

  • wentworth says:

I have been banging on for ages that we have a very poor squad. You only have to look at our bench. We have Son and Kane, a few reasonable performers and a wodge of very ordinary players who would not get any where near most of the top teams. Often the opposing bench is better than our “first eleven”.
Our transfers in have been dismal failures, in most cases, owing to Levy’s exasperating way of looking for cheapies and lack of footballing nouse.
We must sort out our academy players. Either give them a chance or loan them out. Sadly Conte does not seem to have faith in youngsters. ( I don’t have faith in Doherty, Winks, Emerson, Bergweijn. They are nothing players. I never had faith in Lo Celso either despite getting a lot of flack.)
Finally, last night’s man of the match showed how a decent attacking midfielder can control a game. He could dribble, tackle, pass and shoot. We only have Kane who does that and he is our N0.9 (10).
Let’s hope that our scouts are now looking closely at future decent signings. Keep Levy out of it and go for the signing early instead of the last minute panic buying.
We may also be looking for a Kane replacement. That could be fun! I cannot see him waiting for another season for silverware.

    • BelgianSpur says:

Conte has been putting huge amounts of faith in Skipp and giving the likes of Tanganga plenty of minutes. Let’s also not forget that Royal, Sessegnon and Kulusevski are all 23 or younger.

I think the premise that Conte doesn’t trust young players is largely overblown. Conte may not trust academy players but that is a different point entirely.

    • wentworth says:

Was last night’s result a disaster for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club?
Well, it was a disaster for the faceless Levy, the passionate Conte, the skilful Kane, the academy players and all the long suffering fans.
However, some good must come from this dreadful result on top of all the others this season.
Maybe, we will see some young players being given a chance, maybe we will at last be able to move on at least 6 of our present squad. Maybe we will be able to rebuild an attractive, winning team by signing decent players instead of bargain bin, last minute non entities.
      Onwards and upwards.

  • Allan says:

Very poor and frustating performance . Even my girlfriend commented that we were the worse side !!
However I wonder if Conte’s tactics and fitness methods are mitigating against the team playing consistently well ?
Son looked completely knackered with others being completely bossed and hunted down . But Berwjin looked fresh and full of running as he hasn’t played many games recently .
It is ineretsing to notice that Conte won his early games but recently results have been poor and it appears that teams have worked us out ?
I’m sure it will be pointed out that the players are well tuned athletes ,earning pots of dosh and ought to be at the top of their game . However they are human and not machines and seem to be unable to produce consistent results . The ground covering statistics are impressive .
Apart from Doherty not being able to hit a barn door I thought that was his best game .
I don’t necessarily agree with everything that I written however I put it down as a starting point for discussion

  • jod says:

BelgianSpur – So basically its nothing to do with the manager we just don’t have players as good as a team like Middlesborough ? Seriously ? The simple truth is the kind of tactics that enable us to beat a team like City become useless when teams defend deep. But our tactics don’t change, it doesn’t matter if you are talking about Conte, Mourinho or even Pochettino – the story is always the same. So how none of it is down to the manager is beyond me.

  • BelgianSpur says:

jod – it’s pretty simple. How can you question the effectiveness of Conte’s tactics when he has in fact won the PL with Chelsea using thoe tactics, won Serie A with boh Juve and Inter, and done very well with Italy?

He has proven that his methods work.

Compare that to a group of players that has generally flattered to deceive under several managers and numerous different systems, and there can only be one logical conclusion.

This group of players, as currently assembled, is never going to win anything regardless of the manager or tactics. An influx of talent, and players with winning pedigrees elsewhere need to be brought in to change the dynamic of the dressing room.

But proven players with winning pedigrees cost money.
