2021 Transfer Thread – Something Else Spurs Need To Get Right This Summer

|

With Tottenham Hotspur securing seventh place in the Premier League table for 2020/21 with our final day victory over Leicester City, we of course pipped rivals Arsenal by a point which was a good reason to smile.

There’s no denying though that this is now a huge summer for the club, we have the ongoing managerial search, there will be the distraction of the European Championships and then, not only will fans be focusing heavily on how we choose to strengthen the group, a big topic of talk this summer will be whether or not Harry Kane finally moves on.

If Kane does leave, he surely goes with the best wishes of most, but a move abroad would be more palatable for fans who wouldn’t want to see him lining up against us. A departure would significantly boost our transfer kitty, but it would also be another major headache to solve – not just in terms of finding a quality replacement, but it might see others address their own futures, so the calibre of our incomings would also need to send a message that minus Kane, we are still looking to break that ceiling.

Let silly season begin…

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

I am now 79 so I share the sense of urgency re us winning something, anything. Is Levy going to break the habit of a life time, and admit he got it badly wrong when sacking Poch, and enter into talks regarding a return. Apart from the fact that almost every notable candidate has hastily declined being interested in the job, It would make sense to get Poch back, give him the Kane kitty and some, and some reasonable reassurances re control and lack of interference, and let him get on with it.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Frank, good to hear from you. I think DL has already indicated that he was wrong to let Poch go and always said it was one of the hardest things he had ever had to do owing to their friendship. I would welcome Poch back myself but I’m not sure it is going to be achievable right now, hope I’m wrong.

  • wentworth says:

Frank..I am 75 and would love to see Poch back
Whether, Levy can cope with egg on his face and blow the moths out of his transfer wallet is another matter

It is a massive job to offload 8 or 9 of the present squad and bring in some decent performers. To sort out the abysmal scouting and find the young stars of tomorrow is another huge problem in our club.

I live in hope. Audere est facere.

  • Pauric says:

If Poch is returning he has to have control of the players he wants out of the club, and players he wants in, if he can’t get those assurances from tight as a ducks arse Levy don’t attempt to comeback. Regarding Conte top manager but imagine him trying to work with Levy, absolute non runner.

DoncasterHotspur – To try and answer your question. You have to start with appointing a manager, whoever you appoint will then try and construct a squad based on how they want to play. Until you have done that any movement on players is likely to be counter productive. So the quicker that is done the better. As I’ve already said any appointment is a gamble, there are no outstanding candidates. Personally I see little point in someone who has been there, done it but not actually won anything. I’d rather go with someone who could potentially take a step up. Maybe Graham Potter at Brighton or Erik Ten Haag (you could argue about whether Spurs is a step up from Ajax but in financial terms it definitely is). To me the best candidate would be Gerrard but then you run into another problem, would he want the job and if he took it how long would he be there ? Like I said you have to accept whoever you appoint is a gamble.

There is no point in talking about buying and selling players without knowing how this new manager wants to set up his team. There is also the question of which players want to jump ship and whether you want or are able to stop them. You also don’t know the state of the club’s finances after lockdown and whether we will actually get back to normal next season. So you don’t actually know whether there is any money to spend. Given most other clubs are in the same situation even if we want to sell it doesn’t mean anyone wants or is able to buy, that even applies to Kane. So talking about buying and selling is pointless. One other consideration is young players and those on loan. Depending on who we appoint as manager more or fewer of them could break through. In Foyth’s case it also depends on whether the option to buy is exercised.

Essentially it all comes down to who the new manager is going to be and what the actual state of both our and the rest of football’s finances is. The sooner that appointment is made the clearer the options will be. That’s about all I can say with what we currently know.

Hot Tottingham – “Those of us that prefer to see attractive and entertaining football; want to see attractive and entertaining WINNING football! We don’t like losing either!” So what part of “we haven’t won anything for 20 years” didn’t you understand ? Maybe you want to win the lottery too. So how about explaining where this attractive winning football that has been missing for twenty years is coming from. Haven’t a clue, have you ?

“Even so, what has money got to do with the style of football to be played?”. So that means there’s no excuse for Burnley not playing like Man City, boy Dyche has a lot to answer for. Its just complete and utter rubbish.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

jod…..he probably couldn’t understand your maths. If you are going to use numbers in your argument you really should try to be accurate if you want to be taken seriously, ok……it’s been a while but 20 years is something of an exaggeration when the true figure is only 13.

  • Niall D says:

    Jod must disagree,
We were playing attractive winning football, it got us to the CL final and, we were in the mix for the league on at least two occasions, you don’t get there by losing.

  • Niall D says:

Where I do agree with you and I think Pauric, is that whomever the manager is, he needs to have at least say in who’s in and out player wise.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

I can’t help but think this Poch talk is just a stunt to boost season ticket sales – the deadline is next Thursday. Most of the Spurs fans I know still haven’t renewed, I am sure the majority of them will but Levy doesn’t know that yet. Personally, I think it is too soon for Poch to return and I think Potter and Ten hag are the better candidates at the moment although to be honest there is no outstanding candidate, certainly not one who would want to work with Levy. But hey when does football ever get prioritised over money for our failed chairman.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

That’s a rather cynical view DH and I really don’t think that’s the case, after the fiasco of appointing JM I don’t think DL can afford to now appoint someone just to serve that purpose.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

But jod… We are not talking Burnley here, are we?

Dyche didn’t and doesn’t have Kane, Son, Dele, Ndombele, Bale etc., at his disposal… All players that are geared towards attractive and entertaining football… This is more than obvious. They are not a bunch of sit-back and defend at all costs, hoof-ball donkeys, as Jose would have us all believe.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

To all those that persist in denigrating our Chairman for being tight, and all that other cliched and BS nonsense… Tight? Let’s just wait and see what happens next… Haha!

Spurs are and will be in a far better financial position than most in the world, next season. All because of his excellent work on our club finances and current debt management.

Just wait and see… I think we will all be surprised (if not shocked) at the money the club will have to spend… On both a manager and players. (Existing players and new)…

Swallow all your cynicism people and Watch This Space.

    Up the THFC!

    • BelgianSpur says:

Handy skills if Levy was running a bank.

I hope you’ll enjoy our prudent finacial position as we live another year watching other teams lift all the trophies….

  • Pauric says:

Haha HT what will you be swallowing when your proved incorrect??? Ha ha. I love your faith in our all conquering chairman.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Like I said Pauric… “Wait and see”.

Then you can respond how you like… But I bet that I’m right in all this…

  • wentworth says:

I, for,one want to see attractive and attacking football a la Poch. We got so close to winning Champions League and the Premiership playing great football. They were exciting times. With the right investment, we could still have been in theox now.
However, Levy kept the moths in his wallet and panicked. The arrival of Moanino was always going to be a huge gamble without investing in top players. It was a disaster……useless bigheaded has-been,poor transfers and negative, boring football settled our fate. To me this has been one of the most disappointing season’s on record. ( Since 1956 for me).
The new coach has a massive job. Those left in the diminishing pile will have to deal with Levy’s miserliness and bargain bin transfers, the offloading of at least 9 of the present squad, the coachingand scouting of top youngsters ( where are they?) and the keeping of the few top players we have.
    Interesting times.

Were we ever really that close though?

We finshed a distant Second to Chelsea. Second, yes, but we never really had a shot at the title – we were just the best of the rest in a year where Chelsea dominated.

We rode our luck to a CL final, in which we competed for 120 seconds.

Don’t get me wrong, being second in the PL, and reaching CL finals is not a bad place to be in general. But the last step is always the hardest to take, and there is no evidence that MP was ever going to get us over the line.

Just woke up 30 minutes ago (it’s 09:00 now where I am). Looked through the usual places on my iPhone and saw that the Poch rumours are heating up seriously. Count me as in one who would like to see a Poch return, so long as Poch is to be the one making roster decisions and so long as he has a reasonable amount of money–in comparison with the competition–to build the squad.

If he and DL can’t get a contract done, let’s hope they figure this out without dragging on so that an alternative can be signed and sealed. If the DL/Poch negotiations drag and don’t get done, the lost time could have a really negative impact. The rebuild needs to be done now. We cannot dither over a contract for weeks on end while other clubs are on the prowl. Unfortunatley contract dithering seems to be a DL bad habit well entrenched.

Who with a sense of self would want to come here if they’re made to feel like they’ve had to wait in the wings while DL and Poch dither about? Last pimply faced teen to land a date to the prom.
Come on, DL, learn to take a plunge into the water before the storm arrives and roils the waters too much.

My alarm was set to wake me with music randomly chosen from a long list. I had good luck this morning as I awakened listening to the twoubadou version of Tu Me Touche by Roberto Martino who usually plays with T-Vice. What a nice way to start the day. If you’ve got Spotify or YouTube Music or the like, check it out. Really nice rhythm. On the album Haiti Troubadours. There are other versions, but this version is the best by far.

Oh well, it’s all a matter of taste, innit? Man, there’s a wealth of beautiful music coming out of Haiti. Poorest places produce the most beautiful music.

    Good day, y’all. 😊😜

  • TK says:

Remember when we pipped Citeh in the CL on away goals? Well that won’t happen again. UEFA seems to have tossed the away goals rule in cup competitions. Much is the pity, I think. A rule change to favour bus parkers. Less motivation of press for away goals. Another way to make footie more boring.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

HT – can I politely ask you how much you have had to drink!

  • TK says:

DC, is there a polite way to ask that question?
