Tottenham eyeing ‘serious statement signing’ as £69 million rated defender impresses in Qatar

|

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs are one of a number of clubs that are keen on signing Croatia and RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

The Croatian is of course no stranger to links with Spurs, with VitalSpurs highlighting Tottenham’s interest in the defender, back in October.

Since, then the hype surrounding Gvardiol has only grown with his impressive performances during the World Cup, drawing parallels of past great defenders.

Former Spurs midfielder Jermain Jenas is one of the many people to be impressed by the Croatian in Qatar, describing the defender as “different class” (via The Boot Room) after his performance against Belgium.

If Spurs do want to add Gvardiol to their defensive roster, they will likely face stiff competition with Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus also said to be interested in the defender (via Corriere Dello Sport)- with a fee of around £69 million likely to be enough to pry the defender away from Germany.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer insider Dean Jones gave his verdict on the rumours:

“If Paratici could convince Gvardiol to join Spurs ahead of Chelsea than he deserves, at the very least, a pat on the back.

“It would be a serious statement signing from Tottenham if they could get that one over the line.”

Ivan Perisic has also added some fuel to the fire regarding these rumours, with the Spurs wing-back reportedly trying to convince his compatriot to join him at Spurs (via TuttoMercato).

Spurs fans will hope agent Perisic can do his job and help bring Gvardiol to North London, with the Leipzig man likely to be a massive upgrade on Tottenham’s current centre-back options.
